Feature Traveler :
Courtney Hawkins with the Simple Glamazon took her first solo trip this year and has some words of advice, tips, and thoughts on her experience.
Why do you love solo travel/ what motivated you to take a solo trip
I have a new found love for solo travel! In my previous position with a different company, I traveled often alone. I am used to hotels and solo dinners so this wasn’t too far of a stretch. When I traveled for work there was a much different vibe. When you take a solo vacation it’s definitely much different! I had never taken a solo vacation before, so when none of my friends were able to travel with me for my 35th birthday I decided “What the hell!?” I had nothing to lose and I didn’t have to worry about what anyone else wanted to do. I could get up when I felt like it and eat whatever I wanted at whatever I wanted.
Where was your first solo destination and why?
I went to Curacao for my 35th birthday. I had always wanted to visit Curacao so this was the perfect occasion. I’ve been to Aruba and Puerto Rico, so I wanted to see what the southern region of the Caribbean was like. Stunning of course! My goal is to eventually hit every island in the Caribbean.
One piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to venture out on there first solo trip
Talk to strangers! People are innately more friendly than we give them credit for. People are kind, helpful, and are very willing to assist with anything that you’re looking to do. A lot of people gave me tips on where I could find a rental car or offered to let me ride along with them on some of their excursions. I met some great people while at the hotel and I’m still in contact with them. You never know where you are going to meet your next friend…maybe a husband…LOL!
Key items you pack on your solo trip
You never know what’s going to happen so you want to make sure you have plenty of underwear. Also a good toothbrush. You never know who you’re going to meet so make sure that you keep your fangs clean! I always figure that if I don’t have my camera I will always have a phone so I will forgo the DSLR and say make sure you have plenty of underwear!
